The Aretian team officially launched the Cape Town Innovation District project, marking an important step toward building a data-driven foundation for one of South Africa’s most strategic innovation ecosystems.

The goal of the Cape Town Innovation District project is to enable evidence-based decision-making and future extension of the Innovation District work. This initiative is developed in collaboration with key South African stakeholders, including the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation, Western Cape Government, and the Technology Innovation Agency.
Across two phases, the project combines urban data and diagnostics with strategic planning: first, developing a comprehensive urban database and key insights on urban design, land use, economic performance, and innovation ecosystems—alongside training and capacity building; and second, translating these insights into a forward-looking vision, including 3D conceptual designs, land-use and placemaking strategies, and a smart specialization and economic development framework.

The Cape Town Innovation District project aims to strengthen the link between urban form, economic performance, and innovation capacity, supporting more informed, inclusive, and future-ready planning decisions. We are proud to work alongside our partners on this important initiative and to design better futures for all.
