Aretian is proud to present the first results of the Cape Town Innovation District project

Aretian is proud to share the first results of our Cape Town’s Innovation District project. Bringing together data on ~81,000 businesses, 1.5+ million employees, four major universities, research networks, mobility and urban systems, the study provides a common evidence base to understand where innovation is concentrated, where connections are missing, and where investment can have the greatest impact.

The analysis identifies four strategic innovation nodes — Cape Town CBD, Rondebosch, Bellville and Stellenbosch — and points to the opportunity to strengthen their connections into an integrated regional innovation corridor.

It also highlights important challenges: spatial inequalities in accessibility, fragmented urban and mobility systems, gaps between research and industry, and the need for stronger coordination between institutions and investment.

The central finding is encouraging: Cape Town does not need to create an innovation ecosystem from scratch. It already has the core urban, economic and research assets of a regional innovation district. The next step is to connect, specialize and spatially extend them.

This work provides the evidence base for the next phase of spatial planning, investment, innovation policy and ecosystem development.

Aretian is proud to contribute its City Science and Innovation District methodologies to this collaborative effort with the City of Cape Town, Department of Science, Technology and Innovation, Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), the Technology Innovation Agency, the Western Cape Data Office and other partners.
