Aretian will publish a new City Science book analyzing global cities and urban design typologies

Aretian Urban Analytics and Design is currently working on a City Science book summarizing urban analytics and design research and practice insights, learnings, and revelations. The up-and-coming publication includes the analysis of about a hundred cities worldwide in order to further understand how urbanism can continue evolving through data science, complexity science, network theory, machine learning, agent-based modeling, and system dynamics modeling. By combining computing and mathematical techniques with economic, topologic, and morphologic indexes, Aretian determines best practices for urbanism and city building for decision-makers and citizens alike.

The book, titled “City Science: Performance Follows Form” will be published by Actar and UrbanNext in the fall and presents an overview of City Science advances developed at Harvard University in recent years, modeling cities and territories from all over the world. The book introduces the 10 main urban design typologies (Small World City, Linear City, Radial City, Reticular City, Monumental City, Garden City, etc) and their inherent characteristics, including evidence-based comparisons of global cities from all over the world.

The book includes 100 city profiles through the lens of the City Science methodology, and presents scientific learnings on topics such as the optimal density ranges, the impact of urban design features on the quality of life of citizens, the ability to achieve the 15-minute city standards based on city form and space programming characteristics, the impact of urban design typologies on urban mobility efficiencies, among others…

This book also develops on advanced learnings acquired during Aretian-led research developed in the realms of city science, urban design, economic development, the 15-minute city, the relationship between architectural design and the knowledge economy, and urban mobility, among other topics. It also discusses why only 4.5% of urban areas in major global metropolises satisfy the 15-minute city standards and how to lead positive change to improve these global urban standards.

The city science advances that will be presented in this book have been implemented in projects around the world. Among others in the US, Europe, Latin America, and Asia. It expands on how Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) are often the mechanism used to align the incentives of city government agencies and private sector corporations involved in urban development processes. The learnings could be applied to any new sort of urban development around the world, whether in ex novo developments, or in urban renewal and regeneration processes.
